Podcast · espresso? on Wa (和) Strategy: Strategy at System Scale

Podcast • espresso? on Spotify

The sixth espresso? series, Wa (和) Strategy: Strategy at System Scale, is now live. In five dynamic episodes, Deaa Bataineh and Carlos Teixeira, along with Kazumasa (Kevin) Yamada, explore a form of strategy designed for complex adaptive systems—where the goal is not to eliminate tensions, but to integrate them structurally.

At the center of the series is Wa (和), introduced not as harmony, but as a strategic capability of integration without elimination. This perspective reframes strategy from optimizing within constraints to shaping the very structures that define markets, institutions, and systems. Across the series, the conversation moves from defining Wa Strategy, to positioning systems design as business strategy, to reframing social challenges as structural conditions, and ultimately to the leadership required to orchestrate change at scale.

A key highlight is the episode on social challenges, which demonstrates how systems design can move beyond solving isolated problems to reshaping the conditions that produce them. The series concludes by reflecting on what strategy becomes in the age of AI—where accelerating rationality makes intention and integration more critical than ever.

More than a framework, this series is a call to practice strategy differently: not as selection or optimization, but as intentional integration across systems—shaping the futures we collectively inhabit.
